About Us

The Association started life, in the late 1980s, as the Dunedin Home Birth Association.  A name change occurred in 2005, in order to reflect our New Zealand identity, and our commitment to the principles of The Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The Association’s purpose is to promote physiological birth and home birth as safe and viable options, and to assist families who choose to birth at home.

We have links to Home Birth Aotearoa, formerly the loose affiliation of New Zealand home birth associations. Representation takes place in the form of regular participation in an email group, monthly teleconferences, biannual Hui, and biennial conferences.

Dunedin Home Birth members meet monthly, with alternating business and social meetings. Contact us for more information.

Facilitated by our own educators, these classes have a special emphasis on natural birth, and are designed for families who are planning to birth at home or in a hospital environment. These classes are funded under contract to the District Health Board, and are FREE to all expectant parents.  See also our brochure entitled “Positive Birth Classes”.
