Organisational Experience

Our History

The Wellington branch of the NZ Home Birth Association (established October 1978) was formed in April 1979.  It became the Wellington Home Birth Association (Inc) in June 1985.  Its main activities are providing information to women and their families about home birth and promoting home birth as a birth option.

As a voluntary organisation, we provide a newsletter, support groups, information evenings, soon to be re-established antenatal classes and other awareness and promotional activities. We are affiliated to about 20 other Home Birth associations and support groups throughout New Zealand, through Home Birth Aotearoa, and attend their hui and the biennial Home Birth conference.

Antenatal Workshops

The Wellington Home Birth Association is pleased to announce the re-establishment of their antenatal education programme.  The workshops are facilitated by Pauline Scott, with support from midwives and members of the Wellington Home Birth Association. Our workshops offer women and their partners/support people a comprehensive and interactive programme encompassing late pregnancy, labour, birth and parenting. We aim to promote, support, nurture and encourage natural, active birth, well-informed and self-empowered parents, and healthy, breastfed babies.

The focus is on normal, straightforward and positive active birth in a home setting but would be suitable for all women who are seeking information on natural, active birth regardless of their stage of pregnancy or where they are planning to give birth.

Workshop sessions are run on three consecutive Saturdays, and are relaxed and friendly and encourage a sharing environment which allows participants to get to know each other as they learn about birth and parenting.

Workshops cost $135.00.  Support continues after the workshop with monthly coffee mornings and association meetings, the quarterly newsletter and access to resources including the library, birth pool and OP rocking chair hire.

Pauline Scott is a trained childbirth educator, doula, conference speaker, writer and published author on pregnancy and childbirth. Pauline coined the term “optimal foetal positioning” when she wrote about the importance of a baby’s position prior to labour, and how the position can affect the way labour progresses.
